Bring a lunch, a drink and a towel for a picnic. Please wear closed toe shoes and dress for mess!
March 17: Images and Words
A picture is worth a thousand words! Be inspired by the watercolor style and color palette of American artist Andrew Wyeth to use a variety of drawing and painting mediums in special sketchbooks. After creating images, develop descriptive words that complement your drawings and paintings, to capture your Maine experience in a visual and written story.
March 20: Travels in Maine
Travel through Maine’s forested lands, along picturesque waterways and the jagged and rocky coastlines, and then use maps and travel materials from Maine to create a photo montage. Later, learn about color palettes and brush strokes to paint with palette knives. Finally, use your special sketchbook to write poetry inspired by the scenery of Maine.
March 21: On the Water
Boat building, fishing, and lighthouses along Maine’s rocky coast provide a backdrop to today’s studio adventure! Create watercolor seascapes, sculptural fish and small boats, and visual stories of life near the water. Along the way, explore paper marbling, book making, working in clay, knotting, and art games inspired by the waters of Maine.
March 22: In the Countryside
After exploring paintings of the farmers, barns, country roads, and villages of Maine, emulate famous artists such as Rockwell Kent, Louise Nevelson, and James Wyeth, who captured typical scenes of everyday life in Maine. Our exploration will touch upon architecture, printmaking, bookmaking and writing games to celebrate the state’s beauty through art.
March 23: The People
Focusing on portraits and self-portraits, learn to draw faces and capture facial expressions and body language. Learn about drawing people using both traditional techniques and more unconventional new drawing skills, using a variety of drawing tools and mediums. As time permits, printmaking and painting with watercolors will complete the day.
March 24: Set Sail
Ready, set, go…let the boat building begin! Our studio becomes the Boat Builders’ Museum to view and draw images of boats inspired by The Wyeths and American Artists in Maine exhibition. After sketching in the gallery, students will paint boat images and then create a three-dimensional display for their work. Students will even learn about and try building a boat in a bottle. Anchors away for a fun-filled day!
