Film Description–After losing her job as a hotel worker in Las Vegas, Ruby Duncan joined a welfare rights group of mothers who defied notions of the “welfare queen.” In a fight for guaranteed income, Ruby and other equality activists took on the Nevada mob in organizing a massive protest that shut down Caesars Palace.
Words shape narratives: narratives shape mindsets: mindsets influence policies. This film is important to understand that and the bold work of equality activities.
St. Luke’s is thrilled to collaborate with Poverty Solutions Group, the Global Peace Film Festival, and WUCF PBS to present this special screening.
This screening will happen as part of St. Luke’s UMC’s ongoing Circles West Orange weekly meeting and is open to the public. Some of the Circle leaders are our panelists.
PANEL DISCUSSION TOPIC:
Why it is important to have those most impacted by the services to be part of designing the solution.
PANEL: Circle Leaders with lived experience in poverty sharing their personal stories.
NOTE: This film premieres on Monday, March 20, 10/9c on Independent Lens on WUCF PBS.
