Art in the Afternoon

Unleash your creativity with an afternoon of art!

Students will have the opportunity to engage with authentic works of art in the museum, in addition to creating unique pieces in the studio. Students will explore the elements and principles of design, all while further developing their artistic talents.

Who: Ages 7 and up!

When: Select Fridays, 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.

Friday, September 24: Sensing Nick Cave

Experience how Nick Cave’s artwork engages multiple senses! See Cave’s colorful Soundsuit, touch the Nick Cave-inspired Feel Wall, imagine hearing the chirping of birds and the smell of flowers as Cave’s artwork comes to life. Be inspired by all that you see, feel, hear, and smell, to then create a soft sculpture soundsuit (that can make sound!) wall hanging.

Friday, October 22: Drawing and Painting Florida

Be transported into Florida’s natural environment through Clyde Butcher’s large-scale black and white photography. Develop your drawing skills by learning how to create monochromatic shading within a scene. Work with tempera inks, Yaupon tea, and coffee to create your own painting of Florida!

Friday, November 5: The Art of Mexico

Explore the photographs in the exhibition, Luces y Sombras: Mexican Photography from the Bank of America Collection. Learn about traditional Mexican folk art, colors, and traditions while creating your own Mexican-inspired artwork! Design a mixed media collage using colored papers, markers, oil pastels, and acrylic paints.

Friday, December 10: Triptych Treasures

Be inspired by the artwork featured in the exhibition, Treasures from the Museum & Gallery at Bob Jones University: Five Centuries of Old Master Painting, and create a work of art in the classic style of a triptych! A triptych is a work of art that is divided into three sections. Using colorful foils, metallic paints and marks, as well as jewels, design a dazzling triptych that can be framed or stand alone as a three-dimensional masterpiece.
