Book Club: Poetry by Chaya Rosen
On Sunday January 24, 2016 Poet Chaya Rosen will be featured at the Holocaust Center’s bimonthly book club, discussing selection of her poems. The readings will be at 2 PM at the Holocaust Center, 851 N. Maitland Ave in Maitland. As the child of Survivors, Chaya Rosen’s work has been influenced by the post-Holocaust era and living among Survivors as a child in Israel. She has written three books of poems inspired by what she calls the “felt secrets” of the Second and Third Generations. “We have become the keepers of other people’s stories,” she says. Her poetry, filled with symbolism and metaphors, most often deal with faith, and hope, and memory. In her book Scattered Stones, for example, she talks not just about the scattering of tombstones from desecrated cemeteries, but also the people scattered from the small community where her parents had been born. Rosen says that she wants people to know that the story of the Holocaust is not over. “We must continue to absorb the details,” she says.” We must learn, and understand, and finally come to terms with that world gone mad.” The book club is open to everyone free of charge, and participants are not required to read anything in advance.
