“In a society endlessly sinking into isolation and an impalpable crypto-digital universe, I find refuge and humanity in the physicality of my work, through touch, gesture, and emotion.” ~ Chris Robb

CHRIS ROBB’S PRACTICE
Chris Robb’s work builds upon the legacy and history of New York painterly abstraction. The compositions of organic forms that push, pull, whirl, and thrust themselves into the viewer’s space. The work bears witness to the gesture and evidence of the body. It is restless and dramatic. Robb works spontaneously, applying numerous layers, obsessively obliterating negative space until we are left with an impenetrable plane of interlocking and overlapping shapes. Paint is vehicle, subject and metaphor. A street aesthetic is present. The curl and flourish of form reminds one of graffiti and the dense and overcrowded picture planes mirror the congestion of urban environments. Simultaneously there is a reference to the natural world as the canvas explodes into clusters of blooms. The process is undisguised. The paint is fluid and drips freely and frequently. Robb’s sensitivity to the medium turns the paint into a nectar that describes delicate poetries: glistening tendrils after a rain, embryonic filaments, the press of life and the fertility of our origins.
