Opera on the Big Screen: II TROVATORE
This musical feast from Berlin’s Staatsoper Unter den Linden stars Anna Netrebko and Plácido Domingo in debut roles at the head of an impressive ensemble directed by Daniel Barenboim. Anna Netrebko, “in devastating form” (The Times), draws a compelling and immediate portrait of Leonora from beginning to end. At her side, the “exceptional” Marina Prudenskaya excels as the vengeful gypsy Azucena whose performance emanates “volcanic heat from the depths of her mezzo-soprano” and portrays “every shade of tenderness and ruthlessness” (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung). Plácido Domingo, once the most-sought-after Manrico of his generation, stars for the first time as Conte di Luna, radiating the “Domingo warmth of past times” with “his magical stage presence [that] ennobles every evening of opera” (Die Welt). To complete the foursome, Gaston Rivero is a delightful Manrico “with an attractive timbre, well-judged phrasing, fine legato” (Opernglas). Daniel Barenboim’s debut in conducting this work is “positively sensational” (Berliner Zeitung), “creat[ing] wonderful moments of soft tone … and reveal[ing] a constantly fascinating Verdi” (Süddeutsche Zeitung).
