The 8th Annual Winter Park Paint Out: A Week-Long Plein Air Festival

Presented by Albin Polasek Museum & Sculpture Gardens at Albin Polasek Museum and Sculpture Gardens, Winter Park FL

Apr 24 - 30 2016
The 8th Annual Winter Park Paint Out: A Week-Long Plein Air Festival

The Albin Polasek Museum & Sculpture Gardens hosts the 8th Annual Winter Park Paint Out. Stop by the museum and gardens from April 24 – 30 to see artists’ works in progress and recently completed works, watch artists painting in the gardens, and attend free painting demonstrations.  Plein air, a French term meaning “in the open air,” describes artworks painted outdoors with the subject directly in view, rather than being created in a studio. Plein air artists capture the spirit and essence of a landscape or subject by incorporating natural light, color and movement into their works. Artwork produced during the Paint Out will be for sale, with a portion of the proceeds going to support the preservation, maintenance and operation of the museum and gardens. Artists paint in the Polasek’s sculpture gardens and at other locations throughout Winter Park and Orlando. Works will be on display and for sale. Stop by to see and purchase works produced during this year’s Winter Park Paint Out! All artwork may also be viewed virtually in “real time” online at

Oil Painting Demonstration with Mary Garrish “Anatomy of the Sky” Demo at the Polasek Museum

In the spirit of John Constable, an eighteenth-century painter noted for his scientifically accurate studies of clouds, we continue to look to the sky as the central subject matter in this demonstration with Mary Garrish. Using her contemporary perspective, she will teach the audience how to interpret the vast sky into a manageable composition. She will also teach the audience how to capture a fleeting moment made of light, shadow and vapor on canvas. Watch her masterfully layer paint and color to create an anatomy of the sky.

Tuesday, April 26, 10 a.m. to 12 noon

Oil Painting Demonstration with Stacy Barter “Florals that Pop!” Demo at the Polasek Museum

Find the delicate beauty in your floral subject matter and make it POP!  Stacy Barter will demonstrate how to push light and shadow using flowers as her muse. With both brush strokes and a palette knife, she will explore color, texture and show how to create a mood with the language of flowers.

Tuesday, April 26, 6 to 8 p.m.

Oil Painting Demonstration with John Guernsey “Dynamic Light and Shadows” Demo at Central Park

Bring your blankets, lawn chairs and picnic baskets to watch the painting demo in Winter Park’s Central Park.  Paint Out artist John Guernsey captures the rich fading light near the Rose Garden as it plays with the Park Avenue architecture and Central Park sites. Gain insight into painting manmade structures and buildings as you learn John’s unique techniques for handling light and shadow with dynamic results. This is a free public event. Come early to snag a prime spot close to the artist. All artwork created will be available for sale in the Polasek’s “wet room” gallery the following day. Central Park is located along Park Avenue in Winter park; there is free on-street parking.

Wednesday, April 27, 10 to 12 noon

Oil Painting Demonstration with Manon Sander “Value Essentials” Demo at the Polasek Museum

In this demo, artist Manon Sander will teach audience members how to simplify colors and successfully see light and darks using values. This technique involves editing your subject matter to a manageable composition and whittling your palette down to just three or four values. This allows us to recognize a value pattern which helps direct decisions about composition and color choices.

Wednesday, April 27, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Student Painting Demonstration with Irina Kovnacka Ashcraft Student Day with the Eatonville Boys & Girls Club at the Polasek Museum

Wednesday will be our third annual student day at the Paint Out. The Polasek is committed to introducing the world of plein air to students in the Winter Park and Orlando communities. This year we are excited to announce the Eatonville Boys & Girls Club as our participating institution. Students will tour the Polasek’s “wet-room gallery” with Museum Curator Rachel Frisby and will learn from Paint Out artist and teacher Irina Kovnacka Ashcraft how to paint plein air in a hands-on project. Each student will work on canvas and receive one-on-one attention. Their artwork will be inspired by the gardens and the quick-painting, spontaneous nature of plein air. The public is welcome to watch the students’ projects unfold around noon, although only Eatonville Boys & Girls Club students will be allowed to participate in the activity.

Thursday, April 28, 10 a.m. to 12 noon

Famous for her touches of “dappled light,” you can learn her secret to capturing the shifting patterns of sunlight through the leaves. The essence of plein air painting is the art of finding and utilizing light. Discover how shadows create a pattern on canvas and have fun playing with the light.

Friday, April 29, 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Happy Hour and Impressionist Painting Demonstration with Joseph Gyurcsak “Figure in the Gardens” Demo at the Polasek Museum

Enjoy a unique experience as Paint Out artist Joseph Gyurcsak showcases the art of the impressionist figure. Plein air painting requires the ability to assess the subject in order to determine value, color and design as well as the ability to edit.  Our instructor will provide a clear path for dealing with all of these elements while capturing the subject in a rapid figure sketch.  A wine/beer bar will be available for happy hour specials beginning at 5:00 p.m.  Take a stroll around the gardens and the wet-room gallery before the demo starts at 6 p.m. This event is free and open to the public.
