Mats Gustafsson (reeds), Ingebrigt Håker Faten (acoustic and electric bass) and Paal Nilssen-Love (drums) comprise The Thing. The trio formed in 2000 to perform a tribute to the late, legendary trumpeter Don Cherry. In addition to the free/energy jazz roots of the 1960’s and 1970’s, the Scandinavian-born players have contemporized their repertoire via recording music by Yeah Yeah Yeahs, PJ Harvey, Lightning Bolt and The White Stripes. The Thing have proven to be an adaptable, turnkey collaborating band in recent years. The trio backed Neneh Cherry’s (daughter of Don Cherry) sixteen-years hence solo comeback, The Cherry Thing, in 2012. The Cherry Thing features gritty, soulful versions of music torn from the disparate songbooks of The Stooges, MF Doom, Ornette Coleman and Suicide. They have served a similar role in backing Thurston Moore in his post-Sonic Youth pursuits on an EP titled Live.
