Timucua, Tourists, Trouble... and Treasure: A History of Lake Apopka

Lake Apopka, the third-largest lake in Florida, was for centuries the life-giving heart of Central Florida. When new settlers arrivbed in the area in the late nineteenth century, the lake served as an “economic engine” for agriculture. By the middle of th enext century, radical changes guaranteed that the lake would soon be considered “dead.” Indeed, nobody went near it by the 1980s.Cleanup efforts in the past two decades have begun to bring life back to Lake Apopka, along with a promise for a brighter future. Learn the history of this massive body of water.
