Venerated - Persecuted - Forgotten: Victims of Nazism at FC Bayern

During the development of modern soccer in Germany, Jewish pioneers played a decisive role. This is particularly true for FC Bayern Munich. In 1932, the club won the national championship for the first time, headed by Jewish president, Kurt Landauer and Jewish coach, Richard Dombi. With the Nazi seizure of power some months later the success story came to a sudden end. 56 FC Bayern members fled or were deported during World War II for religious or political reasons, representing only a small fraction of the many stories of suffering and woe. FC Bayern’s Venerated-Persecuted-Forgotten exhibition shares the stories of nine club players and officials who were affected by National Socialism in Germany, including the remarkable story of former president, Kurt Landauer who received a visa to go to New York and rebuild his life, but instead he chose to move back to Munich to rebuild the club he loved.
