Boy meets Girl. Boy falls in love. Girl doesn’t. A postmodern love story and fresh and funny “anti-romantic” comedy set in Los Angeles, (500) DAYS OF SUMMER presents a delightfully surprising dissection of the unpredictable trajectory of one young man’s no-holds-barred love affair. Tom (Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Brick) is a would-be architect turned hapless greeting card copywriter who becomes smitten with the oh-so alluring Summer (Zooey Deschanel, Elf), the boss’s breezy new secretary. Full of flashbacks and flash forwards, the action winds back and forth through their on-again, off-again, sometimes blissful, often tumultuous relationship. Covering the whole dizzying territory from infatuation, dating, and sex to separation, recrimination and redemption in a whirl of time jumps, split screens, karaoke numbers, and cinematic verve, (500) DAYS OF SUMMER adds up to a kaleidoscopic portrait of why it can be so laughably hard to make sense of love. Gordon-Levitt and Deschanel have never been better than they are in this often hilarious hit from the 2009 Sundance Film Festival.
