Winter Garden MusicFest 2015
Historic downtowns and turn-of-the-20th-century brick buildings aren’t your typical setting for a music festival. Match that with a wildly eclectic lineup on two main stages, street musicians in alleys and street corners, sounds ranging from classical strings to Rock Funk and everything in between, and you have yourself a unique, jam-packed, band-watching weekend. Over the course of three days, join music-lovers of all ages as they traverse from stage to street corner, to the Garden Theatre, to six different clubs and restaurants (including the Plant Street Market and Crooked Can Brewery), while enjoying a combination of big name groups, raw new talent, and local favorites from the talent-rich Florida community… all for free! Visual arts exhibitions, locally crafted goods, a light show, some of the area’s best food (including five award-winning restaurants), even a kids’ instrument discovery zone round out the experience. This year is the tenth anniversary of the festival. In celebration, the Winter Garden Heritage Foundation is collaborating with the Winter Garden Art Association to host “10 Guitars,” featuring 10 guitar sculptures throughout Historic Downtown. Ten different local artists have adorned the sculptures in a variety of mediums. The works of art will be auctioned during MusicFest weekend. Find more information on the artwork, the artists, and the auction at 10Guitars.com. Another special part of this year’s festival will be the hugely popular Celtic Rock band Off Kilter, closing act on the evening on Saturday night. Off Kilter recently ended their 18-year run in the Canada pavilion at Disney’s Epcot. The outpouring of support by Off Kilter fans for this local group resulted in the formation of a Facebook page called ‘Save Off Kilter,’ that now boasts nearly 3000 members. The band has been touring their signature sound around the country; MusicFest will be the first local performance since their contract with Disney ended. “Three of our members live, work, and play in Winter Garden,” founding band member Jamie Holton says. “We’re very excited to be performing for our own hometown.” Other headliners in this year’s festival include tribute band Johnny Dee and the Starlights gracing the stage on Friday, with a full set of 50s & 60s classics from Elvis, Dion & the Belmonts, Chuck Berry and more. And, back by popular demand, Jonnie Morgan Band returns with their horn-infused modern rock sound on Saturday night. From the soulful rhythm of Latin Jazz, the exotic upbeat tempo of Chilean Acoustic, the melodic vocals of Blues and Soul, the heart-pumping beat of Japanese drums, the heavy-electric guitar of Southern and Acoustic Rock, the lilting hum of Celtic bagpipes, to the wafting strain of electric strings….. you’ll hear it all during three days of non-stop fun.
