Brevard Museum of History and Natural Science

The mission of the Brevard Museum of History & Natural Science is to operate and maintain a museum for the education of the public about regional cultural heritage and to preserve historic artifacts and natural history specimens that support this educational mission. Colorful dioramas depicting the area from the days of woolly mammoths and saber tooth cats to the modem era of rockets and space shuttles show visitors the diverse and rich history of Brevard County. Visitors can handle fossils, specimens and artifacts from the animals and cultures that lived in this area over many thousands of years. Ongoing exhibits at the museum include simulations of: An archaeological dig of the 7000+ -year- old Windover burial site; the customs of the Ais and Seminole Indian tribes; the quaint village lifestyle that graced the 1st quarter of the 19th century when the first permanent settlers arrived. Included are replicas of the local hardware store and bank and the development of the citrus industry. An extensive series of dioramas show Brevard’s main ecosystems including the Central East Coast Barrier Reef and the Saltwater Marsh. These displays, that showcase hundreds of specimens of mollusk, fish, reptiles, birds and mammals, give visitors a sense of the fragility of the ecosystem and the interdependence of sea, land and man.
