Our show celebrates the 101st Anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment.
Ladies Taking Liberty,” a celebration of the passage of the 19th Amendment to the US Constitution, guaranteeing women the right to vote, will be performed November 2 & 3 at the Athens Theatre in DeLand. The pandemic delayed the play from its original date of August 18, 2020, the exact 100 year anniversary.
The show is a journey through history, from Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony to Carrie Chapman Catt and Alice Paul, from Sojourner Truth to Sonia Sotomayor and America’s young poet-laureate, Amanda Gorman. It is an event full of untold history, a commemoration of the work and achievements of the many, sung and unsung, featuring storytellers, poets, singers, dancers, and musicians.
There will be three performances, Tuesday and Wednesday evening at 7:30, and one matinee, at 2:00 pm on Wednesday. Before the first performance, there will be a suffrage street march beginning at 6:30 from Woodland Boulevard to the theatre, down West Indiana Avenue in DeLand. The public is invited to dress in suffrage attire or to come as they are.
Proceeds from the event are dedicated to women oriented non-profits, such as the League of Women Voters of Volusia County. Tickets are $12 & $17 and are available at email@example.com or by calling the theater at 386-736-1500.
The show is directed by Deborah McShane and produced by Suze Peace.
