F.S. McLaughlin Mural

F.S. McLaughlin was supervising principal of Lake Wales Schools for nearly 4 decades. The founding of the current Lake Wales Charter Schools has its root in the desire to return to a school system the community knew during the tenure of McLaughlin. Mrs. McLaughlin was an integral part of the successful school system. Funded primarily by Frank McLaughlin Jr. this mural was dedicated in 2006 with many former teachers and family members in attendance. Sponsored by" Frank McLaughlin Jr.

Family of Herons

Keith Carroll brought this “Family of Herons” to life from large dead trees designated to be removed from the back of City Hall at Lake Concord Park. Selected by the Rupp family as a tribute to their late daughter, Tracy, Carroll was chosen based on his previous outstanding works of art that adorn parks and other natural settings throughout the State of Florida. He started his career as a woodcarver over twenty years ago while he was a pastor at a church. Since then, he has created many works of art carved out of dead tree trunks throughout the state as far north as Tallahassee and stretching to the southern tip of Miami. Located at three locations throughout Lake Concord Park, the herons are not only a striking example of “recycled” art, but also a touching example of familial love

Fantasy Swan Monument

ABOUT THE SCULPTURE The Fantasy Swan Monument is a bronze sculpture created by a Thailand sculptor known as S. Hardthalae. Not very much information is available for this artist. The Fantasy Swan Monument at Lake Eola marks the historical landing spot of Orlando’s First-Ever Cartoon Character for the Arts: “AngiArts.” This life-size bronze sculpture is corelated with the fantasy letterbook storybook authored by the donor: The Identity of “AngiArts”. The bronzed, open-book plaque on the bridge tells the story in 175 words, while the sculpture portrays a magical moment prophesied by the Almighty Centurion Genie inside the book. This is the magical moment when the magic spell upon the princess’s pet swan vesture ends, transforming it back into an elegant Black-Necked Swan…the mystical moment when the princess finally discovers her true identity. By the superpowers of the genie, the angel of her soul was released. From that day forward she became immortal to fulfill the divine prophesy and the will of the Art Deities of Inspiration—to instill artistic inspiration and goodwill into the hearts of ALL peoples of ALL cultures in the 3rd Millennium and beyond! “AngiArts” is an imaginary, adventurous art zealot with magic superpowers, who flies around on her magic red theatre carpet fulfilling the missions of her destiny. She appears wherever “genie-magic” is needed. “Let the magical aura of this sculpture evoke a moment for soulful inspiration that shall move your hearts to joy! The end to this story now begins inside your own soul.” AP ABOUT THE ARTIST/AUTHOR The Fantasy Swan Monument was donated to the City of Orlando on October 18, 2008 by Angi Perretti, a local arts & culture philanthropist, author and private donor for Orlando’s Public Art projects across the City Beautiful. Intentionally corelating a vintage letterbook storybook with the monument, The Identity of “AngiArts”, was written exclusively to be read while relaxing on a picnic blanket on the tranquil banks of Lake Eola. It stages an “interactive, literary theatre experience” right on the spot like no other fantasy storybook. After finishing the story, your mission is to now “hold the trance” while following the Monument Map in Chapter 9. It will lead you to the historical landing spot of “AngiArts.” Once there, believe in magic for just a moment and challenge your senses to watch fantasy unfold to reality right before your very eyes! You are standing at Orlando’s Monument for Artistic Inspiration. For your convenience, the book is available to check out for FREE at the Orange County Library only 2 blocks away. Transposing the realm of fantasy into elements of reality, the author also donated a pair of live, Black-Necked Swans—naming one of them “Queenie”—to reign Lake Eola as Orlando’s very own magic fantasy swan, a character inside the book. Look for “Queenie” floating elegantly somewhere on the Lake. She will listen to the voice of your dreams and send inspiration back to your heart. As a costume designer and master seamstress, Angi Perretti contrived the character identity of “AngiArts” in 2006 and made her Premier Appearance at a charity event at the Rosen Centre Hotel on Sunday, March 5, 2006, benefitting Variety Club of Orlando. The ultimate forecast for “AA” was to rally and promote the arts and culture movement in downtown Orlando. As a local author on a mission to inspire the cultural history of the City Beautiful, Author Angi Perretti created this inspiring, skyscape-hopping cartoon character to wield her superpowers and goodwill to all. www.theidentityofangiarts.com

Fletcher and Son Mural

Friends and family of current Fletcher Electric owner, John Fletcher commissioned a mural depicting founder Virgil Fletcher "passing the torch" to his son. The mural was designed to be a surprise for john when he returned from a two-week hunting trip. Accomplished artist Lisa Moore was selected to do the work. Much pre-planning enabled Lisa to start on the job as John left town. A succession of 15-hour days resulted in the unveiling when John returned two weeks later. Florida Flowers

This mural undertaken by Tom Freeman in the summer of 2005, was Tom's last outdoor mural and an outdoor masterpiece. Health problems delayed the completion until 2006 when Tom's health improved. Local artists under his supervision were able to see the completion and dedication of the mural in December 2006. This gorgeous panorama of color, flowers and Florida animals is best viewed from the Post Office, just across the street. The mural was fully funded by True Value Hardware.

Florida House with Red Chair

Steve Rogers was born in 1947 in New York City. He attended Rollins College in Winter Park and received a bachelor’s degree from Monmouth College in Monmouth, Illinois, in 1969.He studied in New York with artist Harold Stevenson, who would go on to found the prestigious Stevenson Academy of Fine Art, and later with legendary watercolor painter and instructor Robert E. Wood. Rogers has made a career of painting since 1975. Rogers' work is represented in many public and corporate collections including the Florida Senate Collection, National Watercolor Society Permanent Collection, the Orlando Civic Center, Orlando International Airport, Museum of Arts & Sciences in Daytona Beach, and the U.S. Fifth District Courthouse. He also has 18 paintings at Walt Disney World in Orlando and 16 paintings at Euro-Disney in Paris.

“As an architect, I am primarily concerned with the sympathetic relationship between my works of art and the buildings of which they are but a part and parcel. Harmonious integration is achieved when the work expresses a visual dialogue with the architecture by responding to the particular character and specific needs of a building. As an artist and craftsman, I emphasize the poetic expression of glass or acrylic as it is animated with light by enhancing and employing its inherent and intrinsic characteristics and qualities. In developing ‘Fluidity’ and the ‘Ordered Turbulence’ pieces, I was primarily concerned with- ensuring that the composition involved the viewer mentally and visually in a manner appropriate to its context. I believe that if viewers are to fully understand a thematic concept, they should mentally construct their own meaning, and that my role as both artist and architect is to assist, encourage, inspire and direct that effort.” – Kenneth vonRoenn Jr.

Artist Statement: The countless collection of Wesley L. Stewart’s (WLS) sketchbooks are packed with gestural energy and linear marks. These repeated, two-dimensional visual cues transfer into three-dimensional forms. This idea is called “Drawing in Space,” which is an intuitive process of metal fabrication with multiple meanings. One meaning is that the fabricated sculptures are without strict guidelines or plans, although exhausted in sketchbooks. WLS builds these sculptures one piece at a time, having an outline of where to begin and end. As each sculpture develops, WLS allows room for a conversation with the material, letting the artist take a backseat to the process. Scale, volume, movement, pattern, and gestural energy are in constant flux because of this. For Us is located at the corner of E. Monument Ave and Lakeview Dr.

Forest Idyl

Forest Idyl was created in 1924 while Albin Polasek was head of the Sculpture Department at the Art Institute of Chicago. Polasek donated Forest Idyl to the City of Winter Park in 1964. The sculpture is dedicated to his memory and is a testimonial of Polsek's devotion to his Florida Paradise, Winter Park.

Founding Fathers

Completed in the mid 1990s, this mural represents our four founding Fathers overlaid on a map of the City of Lake Wales. The Historic Lake Wales Society was instrumental in the original funding of this work. By 2005, serious problems had developed on the surface and the stucco was falling off. Artist Lisa Moore accepted the challenge of repairing the stucco and repainting the mural. This was completed in 2008 and again in 2015. This mural enhances the Central Avenue entrance to our historic downtown. Funding for the refurbishing came from local donations to the Mural Enhancement Program. Four Elements

If you've been on Orange Avenue, you are sure to have seen this sculpture. This larger than life piece is representative of the four elements of nature: Water, Earth, Fire, Air/Wind. The female figures emerge gracefully from the base of the work, arms outstretched in a gesture of openess but also suggestive of immense power.

Frank Sperry Fountain

Created in honor of Orlando Mayor Frank Sperry 1914-1916. The fountain is adorned with swans - one at the top and three at bottom. Swans are a common sight at Lake Eola.

Fredonia, Georgia

An active artist, Dan Biferie has displayed his photographs in more than 150 exhibitions nationally, including 20 one-person shows. His works have been widely published and are represented in major public collections including the National Museum of American Art, New Orleans Museum of Art, the High Museum and the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris. Biferie is chair of the School of Photography at Daytona State College and a senior professor at the Southeast Center for Photographic Studies. He was founding director of the DBCC Gallery of Fine Arts, organizing more than 500 exhibitions, lectures, workshops and seminars during his 12-year tenure. He also played a leading role in the creation of the Southeast Museum of Photography.
