Man Carving His Own Destiny

Man Carving His Own Destiny has a long history. The first of 53 variations was created in 1907 while Albin Polasek was a student at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and came from the idea which endeavored to show man hewing his way out of darkness and the prison of ignorance, chiseling is how own destiny. In 1920, after becoming the head of the Sculpture Department at the Art Institute of Chicago, he modeled a new version of “Man Carving” which was four feet high. The second-to-last version of “Man Carving” resides in Polasek’s own home in Winter Park—a towering piece carved out of limestone and serves to remind visitors of the sculptor’s insistence on making his way in the world on his own terms. This version was presented as a longterm loan to the Winter Park Public Library by the Albin Polasek Foundation in 1991.

"Growing up on a lake in the Mississippi delta, I spent a lot of time alone, surrounded by natural beauty. My pots are simply reflections of my love of nature in its purity of form and surface. Technically, my work is hand-constructed or cast and altered of terra cotta, then burnished with terra sigillata, a fine clay slip. The work then is usually pit-fired outside in hay, sawdust, bamboo and other plants. Hopefully, the pieces I made for the Ocean Center reflect my love for the natural beauty of Volusia County. Molecular Dog/C3H8

Molecular Dog/C3H8 was installed in 2008 by the City of Winter Park Public Art Advisory Board. Chambers describes this piece as part of series of works which reference mythology, chemical formulas, rendered as molecular models. This work called Propane by Chambers is a hydrocharbon C3H8 or propane gas. Molecular Dog was cast at American Bronze Foundry in Sanford. Monument of States

A permanent feature of downtown Kissimmee was dedicated by U.S Senator Claude Pepper in 1943. The 40 foot monument was created at the start of World War II following the attack on Pearl Harbor. It was created with stones and fossils from all 48 states at the time and over time has grown to include stones from all 50 states and 20 foreign countries. In 2001 the monument was refurbished with a new coat of paint on the stones and a new flag was installed.

Mt. Carmel, Alabama

An active artist, Dan Biferie has displayed his photographs in more than 150 exhibitions nationally, including 20 one-person shows. His works have been widely published and are represented in major public collections including the National Museum of American Art, New Orleans Museum of Art, the High Museum and the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris. Biferie is chair of the School of Photography at Daytona State College and a senior professor at the Southeast Center for Photographic Studies. He was founding director of the DBCC Gallery of Fine Arts, organizing more than 500 exhibitions, lectures, workshops and seminars during his 12-year tenure. He also played a leading role in the creation of the Southeast Museum of Photography.
