Artist Statement: The countless collection of Wesley L. Stewart’s (WLS) sketchbooks are packed with gestural energy and linear marks. These repeated, two-dimensional visual cues transfer into three-dimensional forms. This idea is called “Drawing in Space,” which is an intuitive process of metal fabrication with multiple meanings. One meaning is that the fabricated sculptures are without strict guidelines or plans, although exhausted in sketchbooks. WLS builds these sculptures one piece at a time, having an outline of where to begin and end. As each sculpture develops, WLS allows room for a conversation with the material, letting the artist take a backseat to the process. Scale, volume, movement, pattern, and gestural energy are in constant flux because of this.
