Below the Surface #7

“For many years, all my work has been about the reconciliation of sculpture and ornamentation. ‘Below the Surface #7’ is no exception. Below the surface has a double meaning, at once referring to the aluminum panel itself and what is literally below the surface as it pertains to the ocean, but in a non-literal way. Illusion is also an important element in the work. The modeled deep areas of the relief are meant to look fathomless, and yet are only 3/8″ at the deepest point. It was also important to me that the work ‘float’ away from the wall, emphasizing the panel as an object.” – Stephen Robin
